Simi Valley girls have perfect run in cross country prelims

Simply perfect.

For the second-ranked Division 1 girls team in the state, Simi Valley High breezed to a perfect score of 15 points to win its heat Saturday in the CIF-Southern Section cross country prelims at Mount San Antonio College.

Not only did Simi Valley sweep the top five individual places in the race, its non-scorers were ninth and 13th.

The Pioneers led a group of 16 area teams and five individuals that qualified for the section finals next Saturday at the same site.

Sarah Baxter, who shattered the course record last month, was first for Simi Valley in 16 minutes, 41 seconds over the 2.95-mile course.

Other Simi Valley scorers were: Olivia Rosellini, second, 18:41; Charlotte Utash, third, 18:19; Samantha Tetef, fourth, 18:21; and Desirae Jones, fifth, 18:22.

Fillmore lived up to its No. 1 Division 4 boys ranking by winning its heat by seven points over No. 6-ranked Don Bosco.

Hugo Valdovinos was fourth for Fillmore in 15:58. Anthony Rivas (16:12) was eighth. The Flashes had a 46-second time gap between its five scorers.

Ranked No. 3 in the state in Division 2 boys, Westlake won its heat with 51 points.

The Warriors placed four runners in the top 12. Mickey Giguere (15:12) and Rocky Peterson (15:29) were second and sixth for Westlake.

Three county schools — Camarillo, Newbury Park and Moorpark — failed to advance in Division 2 boys.

Camarillo was fifth in its heat. Joel Gonzalez was sixth in 15:17 to qualify as an individual. Esteban Vega was 11th in 15:34.

Marmonte League rivals Newbury Park and Moorpark were fifth and sixth in their heat. Jonathan Byrne of Newbury Park qualified as an individual by placing sixth in 15:39, finishing just ahead of teammate Frederick Pond. Michael Picchini (15:56) was 20th for Moorpark.

Thacher won its Division 5 boys and girls races.

With a lineup that included two freshmen and two sophomores, the Thacher boys were dominate, scoring just 44 points. Simon Novich (16:46), Spencer Mccune (16:47) and Peter Callan (16:47) placed seventh through ninth.

In Division 5 girls, Thacher placed five runners in the top 15 to win its heat. The Toads had just a 14-second gap between its top four finishers. Arianna Finger was eighth in 19:41.

A third-place finish enabled Ventura to qualify in Division 1 girls. Hannah Kirkegaard (17:53) and Rebecca Guadiana (18:21) were fourth and ninth for Ventura.

Not qualifying in Division 1 girls was Buena, which was 11th in its heat.

Simi Valley reached the Division 1 boys final by placing fourth in its heat. Juan Jimenez (15:46) and Garrett Lepine (15:56) were 10th and 13th.

Falling short in a bid for the final was Ventura, which was sixth in its Division 1 boys heat.

Thousand Oaks and Moorpark advanced in Division 2 girls with fourth-place finishes in their heats. Genevieve Johnson was Thousand Oaks' lead runner, placing ninth in 18:47. Moorpark's Monika Gyalay won her heat in 17:51.

Fifth place was not good enough for Newbury Park to move on in its Division 2 girls heat. Freshman Swathi Samuel was 19th in 18:52 for Newbury Park. Also missing by one place was Pacific View League champion Camarillo, led by Kathleen Dunne (18:56), who was 14th.

Jenny Giguere of Westlake advanced to the Division 2 girls final as an individual after placing fifth in 18:09.

State-ranked Oak Park qualified in Division 3 boys by placing third. County champion Sahm Bazargan and Patrick Thedinga were fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 15:25.

James FitzGerald of Rio Mesa advanced to the section finals as an individual by placing third in 15:42 in his Division 3 race. Rio Mesa placed 10th and did not qualify. Neither did Hueneme, which was 14th in its heat.

In Division 3 girls, Oak Park qualified by placing third. Freshman Brittney Blackwell was seventh in 18:56. Not advancing was Rio Mesa, which finished 12th.
