WALNUT >> Rancho Cucamonga freshman Erin Holton admitted to being intimidated by Temecula Great Oak, the No. 1-ranked team in the state.

On Saturday, she gave Great Oak a reason to be intimidated.

Holton, running in the first race of the day and against Great Oak, won the Division 1 race with a school course record time of 17 minutes, 27 seconds at the CIF-SS Prelims at Mt. San Antonio College.

“Next week, I know they’re going to be even harder to beat,” Holton said.

Did her nerves improve as the race went on?

“Yes. But I was still really nervous,” she said.

Holton, who was fastest among all Division 1 heats Saturday, knows she’ll need to run faster in order to win at CIF-SS Finals next week, “probably sub-17 or 17 flat,” she said.
